In this Ted talk, Dan Ariely Is trying to clear why do people cheat, and he explains that by giving examples and studies about how do people react in some situations and when is the time that people cheat more. However, people sometimes think when they cheat a little bit it's okay. He also supports his talk with a personal experience.

According to the speaker, the reason people sometimes cheat is because they think that is okay, especially in the following situation. When people are surrounded by individuals who are cheating, the opinion that cheating is okay enhances. When the incentives, such as money, increase, people tend to accept cheating as well. However, people usually are unwilling to admit their mistakes; instead, they think what they do is certain. In order to help ourselves to certainly and rationally know our own defects, we need to bravely admit our mistakes.
ReplyDeleteIt is really good point that we need to bravely admit our mistakes in order to help ourselves to certainly and rationally know our own defects. Actually many people are unwilling to admit their mistakes really even if that kinds of mistakes is obviously generated from wrong idea. That's reason can be their strong institution as the speaker said. Also, I experienced similar events like this. When I was in high school, one of my teacher, I think his main subject was history, taught us something and I have question about it, so asked it after class. Af first, he explained the question, but I still didn't understand it, so we searched it on internet. To be honest, his lecture was wrong, and that is the why I didn't understand his class. But he was really unwilling to admit his mistakes, because he is teacher! I think all of us can make mistakes, so we need to take position to admit our defects.

ReplyDeletein over all about the video, may i answer all the question. i see that cheating is the same in all the ways, some people think they could cheat or lying for some situation they think that help in good way. the speaker try to define the ethics from his way that he face. he pain force him to think more out of the normal way that any one think. some people they might lying, cheating, or thinking in different way and find excuses for them self because they forced to do what they did. our ethics its not only about cheating, it is related to many factors in our life if not all. ethics its the base for every thing, but some times we don't notice that because we used to acting ethically. anyone have to do what he think its right for him without effect the people around him. so do what ever you want life is short. :)
I agree with some of your views that people need to adopt some unethical solutions because they have to resolve some issues. However, I oppose that we are unable to do whatever we want to do. The reason is because we need the robust laws and principle to restrict our unreasonable behaviors; for example, if everyone cheat in the exam, there is no motivation for those who study or work hard to exert themselves. Even those who never study or work are able to obtain good grades or salaries, why should people devote themselves to doing the meaningless tasks?
DeleteI also agree with your opinion Khaled and Victor. There are many more elements which work in the real world for cause of unethical beahvior. For example, some people may have distorted view of exam and test, so they can just do cheating for purpose of disobedience. Also, the system of evaluating can affect like when school select absolute evaluation, students will be more willing to cheat because other student's score will not affect them. However, when the school select grade on a curve, the response for cheating will be different with above case since another student's score will affect their score. Likewise, there are so various elements which affect people make cheat or be honest and I think researching all of things is pretty hard.

ReplyDeleteThe talk is about of our irrational way of thinking about money and investments, how expectations shape perception, economic and psychological analyses of dishonesty by honest people, how social and financial incentives work together (or against each other) in labor, how self-control comes into play with decision making, and how emotion (rather than cognition) can have a large impact on economic decisions. This highly interdisciplinary course will be relevant to all human beings. This is related wiht the Intuition which is ability to make good decisions with a few information and how the people take risks based on it. In my opinion, the people who tray to brake a paradigm need to beliefs and feel confortable with the case of study. that allow you to see and understand reality , and help us solve problems

ReplyDeleteIn my opinión when people face the decision to cheat, they often look to others to gain information about appropriate behavior. When people see others like them ( people they feel similar to) behaving unethically, they are more likely to cheat themselves. Interestingly, others exemplary ethical behavior affects their likelihood to behave honestly, but it has a weaker influence compared to others unethical behavior.
Yes, I also think this part that said about group behavior. Actually, when people act as sole and as a group, the outcome is really different. In my opinion, in the group, there will be a kind of pressure like peer pressure. Because when people who within the same group cheat, the rest of them will feel free of it and people who don't cheat will be treated like nerd. Also, the all of group memebers are have same responsibility, even if they will be caught, they think it is not that big thing because the burden and guiltness is divided. There will be many more reasons that why people as a group cheat more and this part was the most interesting for me.

People strive to maintain a positive self-concept both internally and publicly. In addition, people typically value honesty, and have strong beliefs in their own morality. Thus, when facing the opportunity to cheat, people seem to experience a conflict between their desire to maintain a positive self-image by behaving honestly and their desire to advance their self-interest (financial benefit) by crossing ethical boundaries. ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, cheating is unethical .Cheating is not the right thing to do. Part of learning is responsibility. Students should spend time for learning. When students cheat they are being irresponsible because they are not earning the grade. In addition, they more than likely get caught cheating and will probably get into a great deal of trouble.
ReplyDeleteCheating by students in tests and in completing their assignments is wrong or bad for the student who is cheating, as well as other students. Exams and assignments are all meant to aid in the learning of students. A student who cheats misses out on the learning, and is therefore a looser. Other students also loose, because the student who cheats gets an unfair advantage over other in getting grades and recognition. But we must realize that this disadvantage of other students is only a temporary one. In the long time a student with better learning is more likely to achieve greater success in his or her life.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, some students believe cheating can be justified in certain circumstances, including by rationalizing that a class is unreasonably difficult or a teacher is incompetent. In fact, most common way students justify cheating is through such as by saying that they had too much to do and too little time, or that an exam was beyond the scope of the course. It is important to be realistic about cheating ,even though a majority of students indicate that cheating is never justified, other students appear willing to cheat at the drop of a hat. Instructors still need to keep in place reasonable measures to detect cheating, and to take appropriate action when it occurs.

ReplyDeleteThis ted talk is very impressive definitely, thank you for choosing great video Rawan! I want to discuss about question two which is related with speaker’s personal experience. Actually, I think opening people’s mind to accept new things is pretty hard and to do this kinds of things, introducing his own personal experience is very good way at the first time regardless of subject. Likewise, his personal experience that underwent some burn treatment and taking off many bandages is good motivation of his experiment and that story is the main column of this ted talk. Also, after recovering from burn treatment and experiment of relevance between intensity and pain, his suggestion to his favorite nurse which is refused was interesting. Because there is another element so-called intuitions. The speaker said when people’s intuition is so strong, it is very difficult to change their mind even if the original way of them is obviously wrong. I wholly agree with this statement. Once people start to believe and trust something is good or right, changing it is really hard and that may be the reason of argument and dispute of religion including a religious war.
ReplyDeleteThe next question which I want to discuss with you guys is question number four. Actually, people who asked to memorize something related with morality or principle like religion are cheat less in that experiment. Ten commandments are also the part of it, so the rate of cheating was declined much. Even when they gave self-declared atheists the task of swearing on the Bible and we give them a chance to cheat, the experimenters don't cheat at all. In the same vein, when researchers asked people to sign the honor code, MIT Honor Code, the outcome was same. Through this experiment, we can figure out what element affects to cheat and how people consider themselves in front of moral things. Indeed, if I join this kinds of experiment, I also may act like that people above. That experiment is really interesting because that means when you need people’s honesty or loyalty, you can use this method! Surely, there can be mutant, it will be really effective I think.
